Why should I conduct background checks? 

Background screening aids in preventing workplace violence, negligent hiring and other risks such as employee theft. The type of screening you need should be dependent on the roles and responsibilities of the position. It is especially important when the volunteer/employee has responsibilities that include supervision, access to cash, keys or kids.

Can’t I just use the Internet?  It’s pretty cheap!

First and foremost, know that there is not one single government database that is comprised of all criminal records from every state in our country. Criminal records can be inaccurate for a variety of reasons. Offenders can have their records expunged; data is entered and updated by humans, thus a margin for human error. False positives can occur due to identity theft, spelling errors, name changes and so on. That is why it’s best to use a professional screening agency who is regulated by FCRA, reducing your risk.

How often should we screen our staff?

Check with your peers.  If others are screening annually, you probably should too as this has become common practice.  Additionally, check with your insurance provider for any requirements they may have.
