“Is anyone paying with cash? Our card machine is down.”
The last thing you want on a busy day is to be unable to accept card transactions. But with some helpful tips and a little preparation, you’ll be ready to accept manual card transactions should the instance occur. What should you do if you can’t process a transaction? If your internet, power, or payment device stops working, you’ll want to do the following:- Run a Voice Authorization. Click here for step-by step instructions. (*Hint: It’s a great idea to print these steps and keep them near your terminal)
- If the card number is approved, take a manual imprint of the card. We recommend using a knucklebuster. Learn more about manual payments here.
- Make sure you can read everything on the imprint. Once back up, you can hand-key the transaction as a Post-Auth.
What if there are no raised digits on the card?
If the card presented is unembossed, you’ll want to take another form of payment. Merchants who hand-key card numbers in a face-to-face environment (rather than online or over the phone) could be liable for certain chargebacks, because they cannot prove the card presence through a manual imprint.
